Brain Teasers
Clever Jenny IV
Situation
Situation puzzles (sometimes called lateral thinking puzzles) are ones where you need to ask lots of yes or no questions to figure out what happened in the situation. These are good puzzles for groups where one person knows the puzzle and answers the questions.Situation
Jenny was helping her sister, Carla, move into her dorm. As they carried a load of stuff into the room, they found Sue, Carla's roommate, already there.
Sue groaned, "Just look at these windows! They look so bleak without curtains!"
Carla responded, "Yeah; plus we'll be putting on a free show every time we get dressed! I can get some curtains; what kind would you like?"
"It'll cost big bucks, as much as $100 per window to put up the rods," answered Sue.
"Yikes!" said Carla. "Why does it cost so much?"
"Well, the dorms were all redecorated last year, and they don't want students messing up the nice new walls with amateur carpentry. They insist that their own carpenters install any curtain hardware. They charge upward of $75 per window to put in simple rods, and more if we want anything fancy. And, if you try to put up your own rods, they fine you $25 per nail hole!"
Sue added, "And don't try duct tape either! A guy tried that last term, and ripped part of the wallpaper off. That really cost him!"
Jenny had been standing by quietly during the discussion. Now she said, "Carla, let's go shopping and see if we can find something to fix these windows."
About an hour later, Jenny and Carla returned and put up some nice-looking curtains, without using any nails, screws, or duct tape. How did they do that?

Hint
What could they use besides duct tape or nails?Answer
Jenny knew she had seen some "Twist and Fit" curtain rods in someone's office. These press fit in the window opening without any hardware. She found some in the local discount store for a pretty good price and they fit perfectly.Hide Hint Show Hint Hide Answer Show Answer
