Phishing
BtB (Bad-the-Bunny) is very eager to be successful in his new job as waiter in the local cafe. His decision to do something (a common phrase) prior to the conclusion of the meal is illustrated by this customer interaction of last evening.
BtB: *How's your soup, ma'am?*
Customer: *It was cold.*
BtB: *Did you like the steak?*
Customer: *Tough, stringy.*
BtB: *Salad OK?*
Customer: *Gagged me."
(so BtB brought her a gratis pickled herring for dessert)
Customer (enthused): *WONDERFUL!*

Hint
Take another look at the title.Answer
Fish for a compliment.(fish for a complement)
(fish {herring} was brought as a complement {supplement, addition to} the meal)
AND ... note that I said BtB decided this in advance of the act, so he INTENDED to *fish for a compliment* (a future tense). Thus the answer is NOT *fishing for a compliment* or *fished for a compliment*.
Also, the word *gratis* means *free*, *no charge*, or *complimentary*.
