Brain Teasers
The Drunkard
A man was at a bar and was very drunk. He had drunk a lot of pints which contained beer. He stood up and shouted to everybody "Listen.... *hiccup* I, me over here will not drink any more beer ever again." Everyone who heard this promise laughed at him and said "You won't keep to your word, you're always drunk and you're never going to change your ways". The drunkard ignored these people and walked home. The next day the same people were in the bar and then a bit later the drunk walked in. The drunk sat down, ordered a beer and began to drink it. As he swallowed the beer everyone at the bar said "Ah, there you go, you broke your promise. We knew you could not last.". The barman (who was on duty the day before) said that the drunkard had stuck to his word and had not broken the promise he made yesterday. How is this so?
Answer
The fact that the drunkard's promise was that he will not drink any MORE beer ever again was stating that he will not drink more than the amount he drank the day before. As he had only taken one mouth full of beer when the people had claimed he had broken his promise meant that the people were wrong to say this as he had drunk a lot more than one mouthful the day before.Hide Answer Show Answer
