line 2: One's shoes mostly touch the ground or floors, rather than walls.
lines 3-4: In some sports, one's shoe bears the impact of passing the ball (e.g. soccer), or in the case of football, punting the ball.
line 5: While walking or running with shoes, when one shoe rises from the ground or the floor, the other shoe ("my counterpart") falls.
