Brain Teasers
Schoolboy Error
Situation
Situation puzzles (sometimes called lateral thinking puzzles) are ones where you need to ask lots of yes or no questions to figure out what happened in the situation. These are good puzzles for groups where one person knows the puzzle and answers the questions.Situation
There are two boys named Jack in a single class; Jack Fosten and Jack Gould. When the teacher calls out the register, the student (if present) must say "yes ma'am". Failure to do so (if present) always results in detention.
On the first day of term in the new academic year every member of the class was present. After the teacher called out the register, it was clear that Jack Fosten didn't answer to his name "yes ma'am" and only was heard to have laughed. He, however, was marked in the register and didn't receive detention. Why not?

Hint
Think about what Mr. Gould may have done.Answer
Because both Jacks are next to each other on the register, Jack Gould had mistakenly called out "yes ma'am" when the teacher had said "Jack" (referring to Jack Fosten) and Jack laughed when this happened and the teacher looked up, realized the mistake, and marked both Jacks present.Hide Hint Show Hint Hide Answer Show Answer
