Book 22
The climax of the physical plotline, which is Hector vs. Achilles is in book 22
Best of the Trojans have to offer vs. the great Achilles in a battle
But the battle is incredibly anti-climatic
Hector has a moment of cowardice and runs, and they have a chase for quite a while before they even fight
Hector runs because of the inevitability of his imminent death
Does the added element of a painful death add to Hector's fear?
Achilles number one attribute is his supernatural speed
Apollo gave Hector a little boost while he was running to give him a chance
The help of the gods, and his supernatural armour, made the battle disappointing because Achilles had the unfair upperhand
Hector dies, then his soul flees from his body. Then the Achaeans desecrate his body, and Achilles drags his head around in the ground
Book ends with Hector's family realising what happened
How do you feel after Hector dies?
Possibly more pity, especially seeing his family mourn and body disrespected
Andromachea's speech at the end, where she talks about her own sons fate
Intermission Lecture About the Origins of the Legend of Achilles
What happens to Achilles after this scene?
Paris shoots an arrow, and Apollo guides an arrow
How did this legend come about?
The most ancient source we have is the iliad, the Iliad does not say how Achilles dies although his death is prophesied
After Homer was written, there is a work in the seventh bc there is another tradition that tells the story of the iliad, it says that achilles mother had many children and tested their mortality by putting them in a pot of boiling water. In later versions Thetus kills many of her children with fire, and Achilles is always saved by Peleus, his father. It wasn't until the Romans that we have Thetus trying to make Achilles immortal by dipping him in the River Styx. This author states that the way the Roman Statius wrote the legend, not as made up by him, but as a well known legend that the Romans already know. Christian influence may have inspired this story of the River Styx because it was similar to baptism. Most greek stories and art refers to two wounds suffered by Achilles; the first spot is somewhat ambiguous where it is on the foot, but as we know the myth now it is recognized as the heel, and secondly through the chest or side. It seems likely in the greek tradition that Achilles first had to be shot in the leg because of his speed, so they had to stop him somehow. There is some evidence that he is immortal, but there is no evidence that he is invulnerable.
The myth changes a lot, for example the Hellenistic period depicts Patroclus and Achilles as lovers, so it is important to look at the original sources of the myth.

So what if you knit 12, then stopped and just let the needle with 12 hang. Then get a 3rd needle, and start knitting the rest of the row by casting off 6, then knit the last 12
So then you'd have 2 seperate needles, each with 12 on them
Then you knit those each seperately for a few rows until it's tall enough for the hold in the middle

Na na na na na na
Just a boring square
I wish I was a pentagon but
I am just a square
I wish I was a pentagon but
I am just a square
My sides equal four
But if I had one more
Then I'd be a pentagon
And not a square
Na na na na na na
Just a boring square
I wish I was a hexagon but
I am just a square
If I was a hexagon
Then I wouldn't care
My sIdes would equal six
If they were made of sticks
Then I'd be a hexagon
And not a square
I've always been a square
And It just isn't faIr
Because I've wanted more
Than sides that equal four
Na na na na na na
Just a boring square
I wish I was a heptagon but
I am just a square
If I was a heptagon
Then I wouldn't care
My sIdes would equal seven
And I would be in heaven
If I were a heptagon
And not a square
Na na na na na na
Just a boring square
I wish I was an octagon but
I am just a square
If I was an octagon
Then I wouldn't care
My sIdes would equal eight
And that would be just great
If I were an octagon
And not a square
I've always been a square
And it just isn't faIr
Because I've wanted more
Than sides that equal four
Na na na na na na
Just a boring square
I wish I was a nonagon but
I am just a square
If I was a nonagon
Then I wouldn't care
My sIdes would equal nine
and that would be just fine
If I were an nonagon
And not a square
So you vant to have more than four sides
Yes, is that possible?
Anyzing is possIble for Dr polygon
Ooh! What are you doing?
Bisecting ze diagonal by ze square root of the hypotenuse!
Please, no not that!
Aah! You squares are so obtuse! There! All done
Well now I am a decagon
And not a square
Now I am a decagon
And very rare
I won't complain again
Cause my sides equal ten
I am a decagon
And not a square
When I was just a square
And I thought it wasn't fair
So I had surgery
To my geometry
NOW LOOK AT ME!
Na na na na na na
Not a boring square
