On a scale of 1 to 5, where 1 is terrible and 3 is average, how good a driver do you think you are?

This week's readings discussed the digital divide and how libraries have an important role in bridging that gap. Libraries have incorporated technology in their programming by offering computer classes or drop-in tech help. They have computers for patron internet and database access and sometimes even lend out devices as part of their circulating collection. Wi-fi has become an essential feature for many patrons, and whether using their own devices or a library computer, high-speed internet is available for all who come to the library.

I became a library assistant at a school because I love books and want to help children develop that same love. I didn't expect technology to be a big part of my job, but as schools move to a 1-to-1 computer-student system, I am finding that connecting students with quality online resources is becoming a larger part of the job. This has been compounded by Covid and distance learning. Students need access to ebooks and information and instructional websites. I need to be familiar with these resources in order to assist and instruct them in their usage. Moving forward, technology will continue to be part of my job, and I am willing to continue my own learning in order to be better prepared.

(Title-1): The Dust Bowl: what was it, where was it, and why was it so bad?
(next-2) The Dust bowl was a series of four droughts in the Great Plains in the 1930s – one spanning 1930 and 31, another in 1934, a third in 1936, and a final one during 1939 and 40. It was called the Dust Bowl because of the dozens of dust storms that blew across the land.
(next-3) Where are the Great Plains?
(next-4) The Great Plains was made up of parts of Colorado, Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico
(next-5) (next-6) Prior to WW1, the land had been used for raising livestock, but after the war it was used to grow wheat. For a while everything was fine, but in 1930 there was a drought, and winds easily blew (next-7) the bare dirt away in dust storms, or "black blizzards." No matter what people did to try to keep the dust out, it still found its way into their houses.
(next-8) Thousands of people came down with dust pneumonia from inhaling so much dust, and hundreds died from it. These are some of the masks people wore to filter out as much dust as they could. On top of that, many farmers needed to pay debts (remember, the Great Depression was going on at the time), which meant they had to farm more, and with the best farmland already in use, they had to start using the worse lands as well, which meant plowing up what was growing there, holding the topsoil down, (next-9), and when insects, (next-10) high temperatures, (next-11) and lack of rain destroyed the crops, the bare soil was quickly picked up by the high winds.
(next-12) One storm in May 1935 travelled all the way to New York City. You can see the Empire State Building in this picture. (point it out)
(next-13) Black Sunday
(next-14) April 14, 1935 was Black Sunday, the day of the worst storm of all. (next-15) The winds reached speeds of 60 miles an hour, (next-16) carrying enough dust to make chickens roost because they thought it was nighttime. The next day a reporter coined the phrase Dust Bowl, and the name stuck from then on.
(next-17) By the end of the decade, 1 in every 10 farms had changed owners, and some 2.5 million people had left the Great Plains to look for work elsewhere, often travelling to California. Finally, in 1939, the rain fell again, ending the nation's "drought of record" for good.

I spit it was ease so leave it to me
Doubted, but you better believe
I'm on a rampage, hit 'em, with the record release
Depending the week, I'm probably gonna have to achieve
Another goal, let me go and I'm over the beat
I go into beast mode like I'm ready to feast
I'm fed up with these thieves tryna get me to bleed
They wanna see me take an L, yep, see what I mean?
How many records I gotta give you to get with the program?
Take it for granted, I'm 'bout to give you the whole plan
Open your mind up and take a look at the blueprint
Debate if you gotta, but gotta hold it with both hands
Pick at the bars, you gotta be smart
You really gotta dig in your heart
If you wanna get to the root of an issue
Plus I'm in the middle, could be dark and be difficult
But they pay off at the end if it can help you to get to it
