I like that idea that you check the obits to see if you need to go to work or not!

I haven't yet got the habit of reading the obits everyday so I can feel victorious over those I know that have gone to their maker. I've heard lots of people say they do this, although it's usually said in a humorous way, but it's never appealed or occurred to me...
yet.

(I have to admit tho, I do now and then take a certain pleasure in having survived this far. It makes me feel... feisty!

Many newspapers charge a rather significant fee for posting an obituary, these days.
If i don't show up in it, it will be because i am too CHEAP to let anyone pay for it.
If it weren't for Sundays, and the new tv schedule, i'd never buy one anyway.
The wedding announcements are a good place to look. Many slow deaths started with that.

I heard about that.

She was anorexic, that had something to do with it.

Yeah, but most 32 yearolds don't just drop dead. The anorexia had something to do with it.

I just found out that Merce Cunningham died this year... I had no idea... He was in his 90's, and he was still dancing. Merce was a Modern Dancer/Choreographer, he danced with the Martha Graham Co. and then did his own work, and his companion and often musical director and accompanist was John Cage, who was the "Infant Terrible" of Modern Music from the 1950's and after, and maybe before...

Last week, the person acting as pilot of a small aircraft crashed it into a multistory building in Austin, as you all are aware. He apparently died in the crash.

I feel a need, since i haven't seen it referenced elsewhere, to note this tragedy set upon the occupants of that building by this pathetic individual who chose a cowards way of fighting back and a sadists way of securing revenge for his being wronged, if that was indeed the case.

I feel saddened that he died in the crash, for i wish he had lived so we as a society could punish him for his actions. I feel NO sorrow for this person.

His family, his friends, those impacted by his actions, have my respect and well wishes at this time of suffering.

it did, of course, cause me to hold my breath, hoping that it was an accident, first, and that it was not another foreign terrorist action. it was a terrorist act, in fact, whether it fits the legal definition or not.

our innocent days are obviously over. we must learn to join the rest of the world in accepting that insanity can be used as a weapon to strike fear. we must carry on, in spite of these horrible events, and not lay down and give in to the intent of these acts of terror, domestic or not.

life for those who survive DOES go on, and there is no reason to not continue it with dignity.

io

I agree, I_O, and had those same feelings about those involved with incidents such as Columbine. In every aspect of the definition, such acts fit the bill to be called "terrorist acts" in my opinion. It is cowardly, selfish, destructive, and unnecessary. My heart goes out to all those impacted directly or indirectly by this tragedy.

RE Columbine, saw this excerpt in a newsletter referencing a book on that subject, thought it might be of interest.

In today's encore excerpt - the media and the Columbine massacre, the mass killing
at Columbine High School that stands as the preeminent example of this horrifying
trend. In the hours after the April 20, 1999 massacre, the press began reporting
rumors as fact - that the killers were "targeting" jocks, were victims of bullying,
were Goths, and belonged to a gang called the Trench Coat Mafia. The myths they
promulgated in those first few hours were all incorrect, yet persist broadly as
explanations in the popular mind even to this day:
"The Trench Coat Mafia [explanation] was mythologized because it was colorful, memorable,
and fit the existing myth of the school shooter as outcast loner. All the Columbine
myths worked that way. And they all sprang to life incredibly fast--most of the
notorious myths took root [in the few hours] before the killers' bodies were found.
"We remember Columbine as a pair of outcast Goths from the Trench Coat Mafia snapping
and tearing through their high school hunting down jocks to settle a long-running
feud. Almost none of that happened. No Goths, no outcasts, nobody snapping. No targets,
no feud, and no Trench Coat Mafia. Most of those elements existed at Columbine -
which is what gave them such currency. They just had nothing to do with the murders.
The lesser myths are equally unsupported: no connection to Marilyn Manson, Hitler's
birthday, minorities, or Christians. Few people knowledgeable about the case believe
those myths anymore. Not reporters, investigators, families of the victims, or their
legal teams. And yet most of the public takes them for granted. Why? ...
"In a school of two thousand, most of the student body didn't even know the boys.
Nor had many seen gunfire directly. Initially, most students told reporters they
had no idea who attacked them. That changed fast. Most of the two thousand got
themselves to a television or kept a constant cell phone vigil with viewers. It
took only a few TV mentions for the trench coat connection to take hold. It sounded
so obvious. Of course! Trench coats, Trench Coat Mafia! ...
"Repetition was the problem. Only a handful of students mentioned the Trench Coat
Mafia (TCM) during the first five hours of CNN coverage - virtually all fed from
local news stations. But reporters homed in on the idea. ... Kids 'knew' the TCM
was involved because witnesses and news anchors had said so on TV. They confirmed
it with friends watching similar reports. ... Pretty soon, most of the students
had multiple independent confirmations. They believed they knew the TCM was behind
the attack as a fact. From 10 to 80 p.m., the number of students in Clement
Park citing the group went from almost none to nearly all. They weren't making it
up, they were [simply] repeating it back....
"The writers assumed kids were informing the media. It was the other way around.
Most of the myths were in place by nightfall. By then, it was a given that the
killers had been targeting jocks. The target myth was the most insidious, because
it went straight to motive. The public believes Columbine was an act of retribution:
a desperate reprisal for unspeakable jock-abuse. Like the other myths, it began
with a kernel of truth.
"Bullying and racism? Those were known threats. Explaining it away was reassuring.
By evening, the target theory was dominating most broadcasts; nearly all the major
papers featured it. ... Reuters attributed the theory to 'many witnesses' and USA
Today to 'students.' ... If students said targeting, that was surely it. Police
detectives ... were baffled by this media consensus."

That's interesting... so what really DID happen then? I haven't really heard any explanation of motive or design in years.

I have no idea. Just tripped on this excerpt from Delanceyplace.com. Your earlier comment made me think you might have an interest in this. Would have to buy or library loan the book, i guess, to see the rest of the story. Might find it as an ebay or other book reseller listing. Delanceyplace.com is a 5 day a week review of books that can be set up to come to your email. I had mentioned it in the past, and have stayed on list with them for quite a while.
I just reacted to a commenalilty of your post and theirs..

I find rehashed clarifications of "history" very interesting, often, and am not unused to seeing a variation in the original theme sold (mentally) to the public at the time.

I didn't even know the whole trenchcoat/goth/anti-jock thing was ever in question. That is very interesting indeed.

Rest in peace to the souls of two great American legends - Dennis Hopper and Gary Coleman. You will both be missed and still be with us in classic reruns.
