Currently being reviewed teaser "Building Blocks"......there are 118 not 111....I rejected, but I guess it can be modified.....

Hey Zonahobo!
I've recently become a reviewer, having reached the 500 pt. mark. Woohoo!!!!!!
I'd like to make a suggestion regarding this thread: "New Reviewers Q & A". In the first post here, I noticed that you wrote:
I think that may be confusing to some people, since the requirement is now 500. (Perhaps you wrote that before the rules were changed.)
Even though the 500 pt. requirement IS mentioned later in this thread, I'd like to suggest that you edit your post to read "500 pts" instead of 1000, since it's the first post that one reads in the topic.

Hi Livva;
Right you are and welcome to reviewing! Thanks for the suggestion and you'll note I have changed the requirement in the introductory post.

It also might be worth noting the difference between rating teasers which are already approved on the site, and reviewing teasers that are being evaluated for approval. It appears to me that some of the comments here concern teasers people are rating, and I don't believe that's the intent. If I may suggest, if someone thinks there's something wrong with a teaser which has already been approved, they can submit a correction for it.

Hi, I wish to comment on the editors reason for rejecting one of my recent teasers. The teaser was named 'Can you beat this?' It was accepted by 3 and rejected by 4. It seems the reason for its rejection was based mainly on this comment:
"Ella [Fitzgerald] was not a jazz musician but a jazz singer so this is technically incorrect...Perhaps "artists" would be a better term?"
Surely the editor is not suggesting that a singer is NOT a musician!? I strongly disagree on this so-called 'technical' point. A singer is still a musician! It follows that only people who play musical instruments are musicians, whilst singers are not. What are they then? Would you then say that singers such as Caruso, Jussi Bjorling, Dame Nellie Melba, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme et al were not musicians but just singers? Singers, as well as instrumentalists, both study at Music Conservatoriums world-wide in order to obtain their Undergraduate or Post-Graduate qualifications in music. Singers don't receive separate academic awards to instrumentalists. They are awarded degrees in music, whether it be Bachelor, Masters or Doctorate.
Ella Fitzgerald was the epitomy of musicians, especially due to her improvisational skills and so on. She used her voice as an instrument, when she improvised her melodic lines. Ben Webster (saxophone from the Count Basie Orchestra) even looked to Ella for inspiration in his own improvised lines.
I am hoping that my teaser can have another chance of without any need to change or alter the term 'musician' in respect to Ella Fitzgerald.
Thanking you in advance.

Hi Jazz,
You need to post this in the "Ask an Editor" forum. That's where editors answer queries about why teasers were rejected and what needs to be tweaked to make them acceptable. Hope that was helpful!

Hey I'm not able to review teasers yet, but I was browsing through the mystery category and teaser #27280 says:
SGT Johnson was patrolling his beat one day and saw a man attempting to siphon fuel from a motor home. After a few attempts, the thief finally got something from the tube. SGT Johnson calmly went up to the house that the motor home was parked in front of and informed the owner of what had happened. He then asked if they wanted to press charges. Amid bursts of laughter, the owner declined to press charges.
Why didn't SGT Johnson arrest the thief on site, and why didn't the owner press charges?
I'm not sure if this is the right topic to post this in, and I know If I don't post now I'll have forgotten it by the time I can review teasers, so I thought It would be best to ask somebody now: In the first line "SGT Johnson was patrolling his beat one day and saw a man attempting to siphon fuel from a motor home. " Does the "SGT Johnson was patrolling his beat " even make sense? Maybe I'm missing something but I don't know what the author meant by "beat ".
Just kinda confused... Can anybody help?

'Beat' is the term given the area that a police officer patrols.

Just a thought... maybe the teaser review section should include a "comment from reviewers to editors" section so reviewers can provide constructive thoughts on how the author could improve the teaser. Maybe limit the field to 30 words or less.

That's been discussed, and it's not going to happen. That's what this topic is used for. The reviewers can point out problems with the teasers. Editors, do indeed keep up with this topic and the one in the "High Scores" (you need 2000+ points to see it)area. Sometimes, the posters thoughts and such is passed along to the submitter of the teaser.
But any comments as "This teaser sucks" or "This teaser is stupid" are not allowed.

I'm currently reviewing "Missing Dollar". I think it's a duplicate but I can't find it in search...I know I've read it before.

--What are you steeling now?--
I read this somewhere. and I think it has the potential to be a great teaser.
I think the teaser could be tightened up a bit...made a little more clear somehow.

7,6,7,8...
Instead of "Fill in the last three numbers" it could read "Fill in the next three numbers" as the three numbers are clearly not the last in the series.
